Google may face record EU fine for pre-installing apps on Android phones

European regulators are poised to slap a record fine on Google for forcing its Android operating system to pre-install Google's own search apps, according to The Washington Post.

The fine, which is expected from European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager later this month, is expected to total billions of dollars, people familiar with Ms. Vestager's plans told the publication. This is the second time in two years European regulators have found Google's strategies to be anticompetitive.

While Google could appeal the punishment, the penalty has the potential to bring major changes to Android, one of the world's most widely used operating systems, according to The Washington Post. Ms. Vestager's ruling against Google could prohibit the tech giant from inking app-installation deals with device-makers, experts told the publication.
