Comcast outbids Disney in $65B grab for 21st Century Fox

Comcast offered 21st Century Fox $65 billion in cash for most of its operations, including its film and TV businesses, according to CNN.

The June 13 offer may kick off a bidding war between Comcast and Disney, which reached a $52.4 billion deal with Fox for its film and TV assets in December. Comcast's bid also comes a day after a federal judge granted AT&T and Time Warner the OK to pursue their $85 billion deal, which the Department of Justice had sued to halt.

Comcast and Disney see Fox as a way to diversify their businesses within a media industry that is shifting toward online streaming services like Netflix.

In its bid, Comcast agreed to pay the $1.5 billion breakup fee Fox would be on the hook for if it cut its Disney deal. Fox told CNN it would review Comcast's offer. Disney had no immediate comment.
