Amazon picks up high-tech doorbell maker Ring in $1B deal: 4 things to know

Amazon agreed to purchase video-enabled doorbell producer Ring for $1 billion, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Here are four things to know about the deal.

1. The acquisition will extend Amazon's portfolio of internet-connected household goods.

2. Two million customers use Ring doorbells. The product allows customers to see outside of their homes through their computer or smartphone, according to the report.

3. Amazon's deal comes five years after the startup's creator, Jamie Siminoff, was rejected on the television show "Shark Tank."

4. Some analysts say Ring is a big gain for Amazon, as it may aid in the fight against package thieves. Others argue the deal is another step in Amazon's move toward running more smart home products, the LA Times reports.
