4 things to know about '4-star,' Amazon's newest physical store

Amazon opened a retail store, dubbed "Amazon 4-star," in New York City on Sept. 27.

The shop is in the city's SoHo neighborhood, a shopping district that tends to attract tourists, according to Quartz. It adds to Amazon's existing slate of bookstores and cashier-less convenience stores, which the online retailer has begun rolling out across the U.S., CNBC reports.

Here are four things to know about Amazon 4-star:

1. The name references the overarching idea that every item for sale in the store holds at least four stars on Amazon's customer-review scale online, which allows users to rate products out of five stars. The store makes exceptions for items that are "new," "trending" or "top-selling," and emphasizes Amazon's own products, such as the e-commerce giant's Kindles and smart-devices.

2. Amazon 4-star's location previously hosted a series of pop-up shops. However, Amazon emphasized Amazon 4-star is a permanent location, not a pop-up shop, according to CNBC.

3. The store "has the sense of stepping onto the Amazon.com homepage," according to Zachary M. Seward, Quartz's chief product officer and executive editor, who visited the store. "Signage throughout Amazon 4-star emphasizes the familiar feeling of its website. Items are grouped by 'Most-Wished-For,' 'Highly Rated' and 'Frequently Bought Together.' People who liked this also liked that."

4. Amazon encourages shoppers at the store to enroll in Amazon Prime and offers a 30-day free trial and checkout. The prices at Amazon 4-star mostly mirror those on Amazon.com, but these discounts are only available for Amazon Prime members.
