AHA report: 4 keys to successful implementation of clinical AI

An effective suite of artificial intelligence-powered clinical support tools requires far more than just the newest, most advanced technology, according to a new American Hospital Association report.

The AHA Center for Health Innovation's "AI and Care Delivery" report outlines the four "foundational pillars" of a successful clinical AI infrastructure, since, the report states, "AI-powered clinical support tools may 'think' for themselves, but they don’t run by themselves."

Here are the four necessary components:

1. People: The deployment of clinical AI tools requires a dedicated team that will not only oversee the project's execution, but also track results and be accountable for outcomes.

2. Policies: When introducing AI, hospitals and health systems will need to ensure they have strong data governance policies in place to protect the data being fed into AI systems.

3. Resources: AI solutions will only achieve the desired outcomes if they are backed by realistic funding, a well-trained team and plenty of time to allow the solutions to take hold.

4. Technology: Providers deploying AI tools also must invest in companion technologies to prepare the data, feed it to the algorithms and integrate the resulting insights into clinical workflows.
