CVS Health released its 2025 “Rx Report: Community Pharmacy Reimagined” Oct. 14, highlighting trends in patient expectations, workforce dynamics and technology adoption across the pharmacy sector.
To devise the report, CVS surveyed more than 2,200 customers and 1,060 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
Here are seven takeaways from the report:
- Patients prefer in-person pharmacy care: Eighty percent of patients prefer face-to-face care, while 48% said they would switch pharmacies if limited to digital-only services.
- Pharmacist trust remains high: Seventy-seven percent of U.S. adults said they trust their local pharmacist, and 84% view pharmacies as credible sources of health care.
- Pharmacy teams want to do more: Seventy-five percent of retail pharmacy professionals said they want to provide more care for their patients.
- Interest in becoming pharmacists is rising: Forty percent of pharmacy technicians expressed interest in becoming pharmacists — a significant increase from 2024.
- Technology is seen as an asset: Sixty-five percent of retail pharmacists said they are interested in integrating technology to streamline work and enhance patient care.
- CVS is expanding access: The pharmacy chain plans to open nearly 100 new pharmacy locations in 2025, including more than 60 acquired from Rite Aid in the Pacific Northwest. The company also plans to launch new small-format pharmacies in underserved areas.
- Policy and payment reforms are underway: CVS supports the Ensuring Community Access to Pharmacy Services Act of 2025 and plans to shift several government services programs to its cost-based CostVantage model in 2026.
