The Kentaro Kaneko Award is named after the organization’s first president, Count Kentaro Kaneko, who helped broker a treaty to end the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. The award honors one American individual and one Japanese individual who have promoted grassroots exchanges between Japan and the U.S.
Dr. South-Paul serves as the Andrew W. Mathieson chair of the family medicine department at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, which is affiliated with Pittsburgh-based UPMC.
She and her colleagues have spent more than 10 years working with physicians in Japan to create a family residency program and family medicine health center in Japan.
An awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Oct. 23 in Tokyo.
