Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia will begin rolling out a new model that will require hiring more registered nurses and, eventually, moving or laying off certified nursing assistants, according to a Philadelphia Inquirer report.
CEO Michael Halter said a pilot study done on an all-RN nursing unit led to better quality outcomes as well as patient and nurse satisfaction. Mr. Halter said the move will help the organization as the government moves away from the traditional fee-for-service model and toward one that pays providers based on quality of care.
As a result, Mr. Halter predicts 50-60 more registered nurses will join the hospital's current RN staff of 600 employees. In addition, certified nursing assistants are expected to move to other jobs or be laid off. The announcement sparked criticism from the union representing the nursing assistants. For their part, the nursing assistants plan to picket starting today, according to the report.
