CaroMont Health CEO Randall Kelley Issues Statement Following Reports of Medical Errors

CaroMont Health CEO Randall Kelley has issued a statement, reaffirming the system's commitment to quality care, in the wake of reports that Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C., may lose its Medicare status for patient safety violations.

On Jan. 19, CMS conducted a survey of GMH that resulted in an "immediate jeopardy" finding. GMH was cited for deficiencies resulting from the failure of nursing staff to follow medication verification policies and procedures. The incident was immediately identified, and a corrective action plan was initiated at that time.

CMS will evaluate the plan and conduct a full validation survey of GMH's compliance with Medicare's conditions of participation. CaroMont officials expressed confidence that GMH's funding would remain in place.

Mr. Kelley wrote in his statement that CaroMont Health is committed to preventing errors with processes such as on-going staff education, patient safety committees and use of technology. He also expressed his pride in being associated with the employees, medical staff and volunteers at CaroMont Health and his ongoing commitment to ensure "that we are not defined by a mistake we make, but rather how we respond to it."
