Planned demolition destroys closed Dallas hospital

Dallas-based St. Paul University Hospital was destroyed Nov. 22 when construction workers used explosives to demolish it, according to WFAA.com.

The 300-bed hospital, which was part of UT Southwestern Medical Center, closed last December, according to The Associated Press. It was open for 50 years. Patients were transferred to a new facility — the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital — which replaced St. Paul's.

St. Paul's was a significant part of Dallas history. The hospital was the first in Dallas to allow African American physicians to practice medicine, and in 1985, it was the site of the first successful heart transplant in Dallas.
