Former hospital director sentenced to 9 years in prison

The former executive director of Springfield, Ill.-based HSHS St. John's Children's Hospital, Margaret Curtin, was sentenced to nine years in prison on Friday for stealing $700,000 from the hospital between December 2008 and September 2014, according The State Journal-Register.

Ms. Curtin joined St. John's in 2006, but she was not new to the healthcare industry. Her experience in healthcare dates back to 1986, when she joined Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center as a business manager.

Ms. Curtin was sentenced to prison for the $700,000 she stole from St. John's, but she also allegedly stole almost $272,000 from Cincinnati Children's while she was employed there.

Most of the money Ms. Curtin stole from St. John's and its insurance company will be repaid, as prosecutors used a civil case to seize her savings, retirement funds and assets from the sale of her home.

It is unclear at this time whether Ms. Curtin will face prosecution for her alleged theft from Cincinnati Children's.
