There may be a 35-40 percent increase in new healthcare construction projects in 2011 compared to 2009, according to a recent VHA capital survey.
VHA recently conducted a capital survey of its member hospitals to gain insight on upcoming trends and changes to expect in 2011.
Other key findings from the survey include:
• Of the 30 percent of survey respondents that anticipate expansion or renovations, 46 percent of them plan to begin expansion projects during the first half of the year.
• Of the 67 percent of hospitals undergoing renovations or additional construction, 79 percent of the projects are focused on patient care
• Approximately 31 percent of respondents consider making their facilities environmentally sustainable a definite priority.
Additionally, VHA has made the following predictions for 2011:
• The cost of construction materials will continue to increase for healthcare organizations.
• In 2011 and beyond, there will be an increase in hospitals and non-acute facilities selecting recycled materials and higher-end materials (i.e. granite tile, sandstone, etc.) for their new construction projects.
• There will be an increase in the frequency of multiple hospitals collaborating to aggregate their purchases of construction materials to drive construction costs down.
