Leahi Hospital and Maluhia to cut 64 positions, temporarily freeze admissions: 5 things to know

Two Honolulu-based healthcare facilities will cut 64 positions and temporarily freeze admissions, according to a Honolulu Star-Advertiser report.

Here are five things to know about the reductions.

1. The cuts will happen at Leahi Hospital and Maluhia, part of the public hospital system known as Hawaii Health Systems Corp.

2.  The reductions are the "last resort to remain operational in the face of an estimated $3.7 million deficit" in fiscal year 2016, which began July 1, officials from the facilities said in the report.

3. The long-term care providers are going down to one skilled nursing wing per facility, reducing the number of beds by 76, or about 25 percent of capacity.

4. The reduction represents roughly 15 percent of the staff, according to the report. Both facilities employ a total of about 430 workers.

5. Staff reductions will not begin for more than three months.
