HHS is tracking its progress to undo the ACA: Here's what it's done so far

HHS is tracking its efforts to improve the ACA on a webpage called "Providing Relief Right Now for Patients."

The page currently links to five initiatives the agency has rolled out since Feb. 15, shortly after Tom Price, MD, was approved as secretary of HHS. These include the following:

  • A call for states to submit more Medicaid waivers;
  • A call for more Section 1332 state innovation waivers, which allow states to propose state-specific alternatives to the ACA;
  • Extension of a policy allowing enrollees to continue plans noncompliant with the ACA if they were enrolled before the law went into effect;
  • Extension of deadlines for payers to determine future offerings; and
  • A set of proposals to stabilize the market, which include adjusting the actuarial value of plans on the exchanges and tamping down on enrollment periods.

"[HHS] is committed to doing everything in our power to provide relief immediately," the webpage reads. "Within what the law allows, HHS is taking action to stabilize the individual and small group insurance markets (the markets most affected by the ACA) so that they work better for everyone."
