Employees at University of California Hospitals to Vote on Strike

Unionized employees at University of California hospitals will take a vote next week to authorize a strike, according to a U-T San Diego report.

Approximately 13,000 UC hospital employees throughout the state are represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees local 3299. UC Health includes five health systems.

The vote to authorize a strike comes amid stalled contract negotiations between the university and union representatives. The university attributes the union's prospective strike to the union's refusal to agree to UC pension reforms, which require employees to put a larger portion of their income toward pensions beginning July 1.

But the union says UC hospitals have offered frontline workers cuts to their total compensation while spending millions more on management payroll from 2009 through 2012, according to the report.

The vote on a strike will take place between April 30 and May 2, according to the report, and the union has not specified a specific date or duration for a potential strike.
