60 Protest Layoffs, Labor Negotiations at UCSF Medical Center; 10 Arrested

Approximately 60 union members and medical staff from UCSF Medical Center held a protest on the San Francisco-based hospital's campus yesterday in opposition to recent layoffs and stalled contract negotiations, and 10 people were arrested as a result of the rally, according to a Daily Californian report.

UCSF Medical Center recently cut 300 positions through layoffs, transfers and eliminating unfilled positions. Yesterday, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees 3299 and University Professional and Technical Employees 9119 protested the layoffs on UCSF's Parnassus campus. Reasons for the arrests were not included in the report.

University of California and AFSCME have been at an impasse since November 2012 over new contracts for UC workers, particularly pension reform, according to the report.

UC spokesperson Dianne Klein said the protest was a tactic for labor negotiations, but "bargaining in the media is not something we support," according to the report. Ms. Klein said the organization believes bargaining should take place at the bargaining table.

A meeting for pension negotiations that was scheduled for April 3 has been postponed to later this month.
