Former Rhode Island Hospital Exec Appeals Corruption Conviction to Supreme Court

Robert Urciuoli, former CEO of Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, R.I., has appealed a corruption conviction against him to the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a Boston Globe report.

Mr. Urciuoli was convicted of fraud and conspiracy in 2008 for paying state senator John Celona to advance his hospital's legislative agenda. He was sentenced in April 2009 to three years in prison.

The appeal to the Supreme Court comes after a Circuit Court of Appeal's decision in July to uphold his sentence.

The appeal argues that the judge in his District Court trial failed to inform jurors of a Rhode Island law that allows part-time legislators to participate in legislation affecting their employers in some circumstances, according to the report.
