Former Rhode Island Hospital President Sentenced for Corruption

A federal judge has sentenced Robert Urciuoli, former president of Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, R.I., to three years in prison for paying former state senator John Celona for legislative influence, according to a report in The Providence Journal.

Mr. Celona received $260,000 in consulting fees from the hospital in exchange for working to defeat bills opposed by the hospital and promoting those favored by the hospital.

Mr. Urciuoli was convicted in Oct. 2008 and plans to appeal his conviction, according to the report.
