5 Hospitals Undergoing Expansion

A recent survey revealed a 35-40 percent increase in healthcare construction in 2011. Below are five hospitals that are part of the 67 percent currently undergoing construction for expansion or renovation projects.

1. University Hospital (San Antonio Texas) — $778 Million
Construction began last week for UH's large-scale expansion, which includes a 10-story tower to house trauma, neurosurgery, cardiac and transplant services. The expansion will increase the number of hospital beds from 498 to 713. University Hospital is part of University Health System.

2. Memorial Hospital (Chattanooga, Tenn.) — $380 Million
After a two-year stall due to the economy, Memorial is expected to break ground this April on the expansion with a projected 2012 completion date. The multi-phased project will start with the construction of a central utility plant.

3. Ventura (Calif.) County Medical Center — $250 Million
VCMC's new hospital wing expansion project is the result of changing state seismic standards in California. The project will include 120 beds, new operating rooms and an expanded emergency department. Construction may begin in summer 2012 and the new wing may be complete in 2016. Ventura County officials say the expansion may be the largest project county government will tackle in the next several decades.

4. Clear Lake Regional Medical Center (Webster, Texas) — $92 Million

CLRM's expansion and renovation will include a new patient tower, an expanded heart hospital and renovations to certain departments. Groundbreaking is scheduled for summer 2011 with a projected completion date in summer 2013.

5. NYU Langone Medical Center (New York City) — $80.8 Million

The three-year renovation is expected to triple the size of the emergency department at NYU Langone. NYU Langone officials said the hospital's current ED is poorly configured, which results in long wait times and inefficient utilization of space. The ED's size is appropriate for 20,000 annual visits, but saw 41,000 in 2009.
