Ms. Brill will begin her role at Microsoft this summer. She will report to Brad Smith, president and chief legal officer of Microsoft.
Here are five things to know about Ms. Brill and her new position.
1. Ms. Brill will collaborate with Microsoft engineering groups to build privacy protection into the company’s products and services.
2. Under her leadership, the privacy and regulatory affairs group will work with policymakers, regulators and customers to ensure Microsoft addresses relevant privacy and data protection issues.
3. Ms. Brill will also focus on issues related to telecommunications regulation, corporate standards and internet governance.
4. Former President Barack Obama nominated Ms. Brill to serve as FTC commissioner in 2010. In this position, which she held for six years, she strengthened consumer protections and fostered relationships between the FTC and European regulators.
5. Most recently, Ms. Brill co-led the Global Privacy and Cybersecurity Practice Group at Hogan Lovells, a global law firm based in Washington, D.C.
