Less Than 5% of Cancer Survivors Receive Survivorship Care Plans from Physicians

Few primary care physicians and oncologists provide cancer survivor patients with survivorship care plans, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

Researchers examined survey results of approximately 1,100 oncologists and 1,000 primary care physicians regarding survivorship care practices with cancer survivors.

Sixty-four percent of oncologists reported always or almost always discussing survivorship care recommendations with survivors, but only 32 percent reported discussing who survivors should see for cancer-related or follow-up care. Additionally, fewer than 5 percent of providers reported giving a written survivorship care plan to patients.

Researchers found primary care physicians who received survivorship care plans from oncologists were nine times more likely to report discussing survivorship with their patients.

Researchers suggest assessing the implementation of new efforts to improve follow-up care of cancer survivors.
