Chicago hospitals treated 234 Lollapalooza concertgoers, 34 fewer than last year

Lollapalooza, the four-day Chicago music festival, sent 234 people to local hospitals this past weekend, down from 268 last year, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Lollapalooza administrators and the city of Chicago made a concerted effort to create a safer environment this year, leading to higher arrest and citation rates and lower hospitalization numbers.

"We believe our efforts to create awareness of this issue coupled with the city's and the promoter's stricter policies around drinking at the festival have had an immediate impact on the numbers going down," said Sally Reynolds, MD, an attending physician at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. "However, we had to admit one teenager to the intensive care unit due to alcohol poisoning, so teen drinking is still an issue."
