AMA Membership Grows 3%

The American Medical Association increased its membership base by more than 3 percent in 2012, bringing total members to nearly 225,000, according to its most recent annual report.

The AMA also flexed its political muscle in the past year. It had more than 125 victories at the state level during the 2011-12 legislative session, including wins that secured insurer transparency and preserved medical liability reforms. It also launched grassroot efforts that led to more than 900,000 contacts to Congress on the sustainable growth rate formula and other urgent healthcare issues.

Despite the increase in membership, the AMA reported $16.6 million in operating income for 2012 compared to $24.7 million in 2011. The change was largely attributed to a drop in print advertising sales and a downturn in coding book sales, according to the report. The association exercised cost containment strategies and "continued to maintain a healthy financial position," according to the report.
