AMA Names 2013 Excellence in Medicine Award Winners

The American Medical Association Foundation has named five physicians as the 2013 recipients of its Excellence in Medicine Awards, which recognizes physicians who exemplify leadership, community service and dedication to treating underserved patients.

The five physicians who received the awards include:

  • Matthew B. Mandel, MD, a retired anesthesiologist in Stockbridge, Mass., received the Jack B. McConnell, MD, Award for Excellence in Volunteerism for his work in creating Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires, a free healthcare clinic for the uninsured and underinsured. Prior to retiring in 1997, Dr. Mandel was the chairman of the department of anesthesia at Providence Hospital in Holyoke, Mass.
  • Mark L. Jacobson, MD, MPH, received the Dr. Nathan Davis International Award in Medicine for his public health work in East Africa. He is credited with building the Selian Lutheran Hospital in Arusha, Tanzania, and for creating a school for educating medical professionals in the country.
  • Rebecca Morsch, MD, MPH, also received the International Award for her work as the coordinator of a community-based health program in Papua New Guinea, which trains community health volunteers.
  • VK Raju, MD, FRCS, FACS, founder of the Eye Foundation of America, based in Morgantown, W.Va., and a professor of ophthalmology at West Virginia University, was the third and final physician to receive the International Award. The Foundation provides eye care in 21 developing countries to combat avoidable childhood blindness.
  • Mary Brennan Wirshup, MD, received the Pride in the Profession Award for her work as the the vice president of medical affairs at Community Volunteers in Medicine in West Chester, Pa., a community-based non-profit organization that provides medical and dental care to low-income, uninsured individuals.
