University of Missouri physicians plead guilty to $190k fraud scheme

Two physicians and faculty members at Columbia, Mo.-based University of Missouri School of Medicine plead guilty Tuesday to submitting more than $190,000 in fraudulent claims in less than a year.

Michael E. Richards, MD, and Kenneth L. Rall, MD, admitted to lying about reviewing X-ray images in order to receive payment for the services from Medicare, Medicaid and Department of Defense plan Tricare. They each face up to 10 years in federal prison if found guilty.

Dr. Rall admitted he filed $120,000 worth of false claims from March 2010 through December 2011while Dr. Richards admitted to filing $70,000 in claims in the same timeframe.

MU Health Care, the health system associated with the University of Missouri, has agreed to pay a $2.2 million fine for the fraudulent filings, according to the Columbia Missourian.
