St. Jude's welcomes first class in graduate school of biomedical sciences

Memphis, Tenn.-based St. Jude's Research Hospital welcomed students last week into the inaugural class of its graduate school of biomedical sciences, according to the Memphis Daily News.

St. Jude's has been planning the school's opening for years, receiving approval from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and St. Jude board of governors in 2015. The five-year, PhD-granting program's faculty is made up of over 100 researchers and clinicians who are also members of the hospital's faculty.

"We had over 100 applicants, and it was an interesting challenge because we had to persuade students to come to a school that existed on paper but there were no prior students," said Stephen White, MD, dean of the school. "But it was good because it self-selected those students who were willing to take a chance. All of our students could get into graduate school anywhere in the U.S., but the fact that they're willing to come to St. Jude and take a chance on this new venture says something special about them."
