Physicians in Wesley Medical Center ER Given Ultimatum

Emergency Services Professional Association, the private physicians group that staffs the Wichita, Kan.-based Wesley Medical Center emergency room, has been told they must become employees of EmCare, Wesley's ER staffing vendor, or lose their jobs at the hospital, according to a report from The Wichita Eagle.

ESPA Physicians are concerned this move will negatively impact patient care. The Wesley emergency medical director told The Wichita Eagle, "the relationship we have with physicians in the community, the relationships with the nurses and the kind of patient care we give is not something you can fly in from out of town and buy. It's created from years of teamwork."

According to The Wichita Eagle, every ESPA physician has been offered a position with EmCare with a similar compensation package. For more than a year, EmCare has subcontracted to ESPA to staff Wesley's ERs.

The physicians have until Sept. 3 to make their decisions.
