Mayo Medical School branching out to Arizona, Florida

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Medical School will double the size of its enrolling class starting in 2017.

The medical school, which accepts just 50 students per class, announced Tuesday it received endorsement to expand and establish two branch campuses in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jacksonville, Fla.

The Arizona campus will offer a four-year program for an additional 50 students each year. Students from the Arizona and Minnesota campuses will now also have the option to complete their third and fourth years at the new Florida campus.

Mayo is also partnering with Tempe-based Arizona State University to develop science of healthcare delivery curriculum for each campus.

"Mayo Medical School students will be some of the first in the nation to receive a certificate in the science of healthcare delivery," Michele Halyard, MD, vice dean and incoming interim dean of the school, said in a statement. "Not only are we training our students to be excellent physicians and scientists, we are also equipping them with the tools to transform America's ailing healthcare system."
