Carolinas HealthCare, Novant File Applications to Add Beds in Mecklenburg Country

Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System and Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health, which operates Presbyterian Healthcare in Charlotte, have filed certificate of need applications that will split the number of beds made available in Mecklenburg County by the N.C. Medial Facilities Plan, according to a Charlotte Business Journal report.

Under the plan, 107 new hospital beds have been allotted for the county. Carolinas has proposed adding 57 beds to its system — 19 beds to its flagship Carolinas Medical Center and 38 beds at Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy, also in Charlotte. Presbyterian has applied for the remaining 50.

In another part of the state, Carolinas and Novant, along with Tenet, which operates Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, S.C., are competing for 64 available hospital beds in York County.
