23k Kaiser, Sutter Nurses Strike Today

Nurses at more than 30 Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health hospitals in Northern and Central California are taking part in a one-day strike today that is expected include more than 23,000 nurses, according to a San Francisco Chronicle report.

The strike, organized by the California Nurses Association, which is part of National Nurses United, coincides with a strike by social workers, therapists and other front-line workers at Kaiser.

Nurses at Kaisers are striking in solidarity with the other striking workers, who are in ongoing contract negotiations with the system. The two groups are at odds over benefit and retirements cuts.

Sutter nurses are on strike over their own contract negotiations. The nurses and the health system have been unable to agree on increases in out-of-pocket health costs as well as changes in staffing agreements.

Both hospital systems' facilities will remain open, using temporary nurses to provide care.
