Trump administration strives for ACA replacement amid mounting pressure to pass spending bill

White House officials are putting pressure on Republican leaders for a revised healthcare bill as President Donald Trump nears his 100-days milestone in the Oval Office, reports The New York Times.

Here are six things to know.

1. Congress has been on a two-week recess, but will return Monday, less than a week before President Trump marks 100 days in office April 29.

2. That deadline has become a target for some White House officials after the GOP's ACA replacement plan, known as the American Health Care Act, was pulled from the House floor last month due to lack of support, according to the report.

3. But next week, a spending bill to avoid a possible government shutdown is expected to be a bigger priority, the report notes. In that next spending bill, Democrats have said they plan to push hard for cost-sharing reduction funding, which assists low-income Americans in paying for their ACA insurance coverage.

4. Still, President Trump has indicated healthcare reform is indeed among his legislative priorities, although he has not provided a specific timeline for a revised ACA replacement bill.

"We have a good chance of getting it soon," President Trump said in a news conference Thursday, according to NYT. "I'd like to say next week, but it will be — I believe we will get it. And whether it's next week or shortly thereafter."

4. In its report, NYT highlights the latest healthcare proposal published Thursday morning by Politico. According to NYT, that proposal would keep the ACA provision related to pre-existing conditions, along with the ACA provision guaranteeing emergency and maternity care coverage.

5. However, states would have the opportunity to ask for federal waivers from many of the ACA's mandates if they show premiums would decrease, the number of insured people would rise or that such a waiver would be in "the public interest of the state," according to the report.

6. According to NYT, Mr. Trump said he thinks a health bill could pass as Congress tries to pass a spending bill.
