Keokuk Area Hospital in Iowa Could Close in "Next Few Weeks"

Keokuk (Iowa) Area Hospital, which has less than 10 days of cash on hand, is in danger of closing in the "next few weeks," according to a Connect Tristates report.

In addition to lack of operating cash, high volumes of Medicaid patients and charity care has exacerbated the hospital's financial woes, according to the report. Local officials and lawmakers have written letters to the federal government, asking for assistance in keeping the facility's doors open.

Keokuk Area Hospital has applied for the federal "critical access hospital" designation, which would allow higher reimbursements, but has not achieved that status yet.
