Hospitals Add Nearly 12k Jobs in December

Hospitals and health systems added 11,700 jobs in December 2012, bringing total hospital employment to more than 4.83 million jobs, according to seasonally adjusted figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (pdf).

Despite some instances of layoffs, hospitals were a major force of job growth in the United States in 2012. In total, hospitals and health systems added 87,800 jobs last year.

The entire healthcare sector has also witnessed large increases in employment, adding 44,500 jobs in December. Physician offices added 6,800 jobs, while outpatient centers added 2,900.
