Hospital Management Checklist: 20 Signs of Well-Conducted Interviews

The following tips, from Select International, are designed to ensure hospital management conducts interviews as pleasantly and professionally as possible.

Preparing for the interview
1. To come across as informed and prepared, familiarize yourself with the position at hand and all interview materials.
2. Closely look over the candidate's resume and other background information before the scheduled interview. Do not read it for the first time when he or she is in your office.
3. Anticipate disruptions and do what you can to avoid them. Conduct the interview in a private area and silence your phone.
4. If conducting multiple interviews, ensure that everyone involved is aware of the interview itinerary that day to avoid candidates waiting around between interviews.
5. Consider the best ways to "sell" the benefits of working for your company.

Opening the interview
6. Greet the interview candidate promptly, smile and make appropriate eye contact.
7. Explain the interview process so the candidate knows what to expect and is put at ease.
8. Set a positive tone and maintain the candidate's self-esteem. It helps to recall how nervous you might have been at your past job interviews.
9. When necessary, rephrase questions to make sure candidates understand.
10. Politely redirect conversations, if necessary, to keep the interview on time and on track.

Gathering information
11. Ask questions related only to job-relevant information.
12. Leverage what you've learned about the candidate and ask effective probing questions.
13. Ensure that you've gathered complete examples of a candidate's past work experiences.
14. Clarify any areas where you feel you need more information.
15. Do not ask unacceptable or illegal questions.

Closing the interview
16. Thank the interviewee for their time and interest in the company.
17. Revisit and emphasize the benefits of working with the company.
18. Take time to ask the candidate if they have any questions.
19. Do not make comments that would give the candidate a positive or negative impression about their interview performance.
20. Walk with the candidate to the door and thank them once more.
