Days Before Prime Healthcare Takes Charge, Saint Mary's Announces Layoffs

Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., has announced a round of layoffs as Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare prepares to take over the hospital July 1, according to a Reno Gazette-Journal report.

Layoff notices have been handed out to an undisclosed number of the hospital's 1,600 employees, according to the report.

In March, San Francisco-based Dignity Health announced St. Mary's would be sold to Prime. As a result, many employees had to reapply for their jobs, and hospital officials conducted an evaluation to determine the necessary levels of staffing.

The California Nurses Association is planning to file a grievance with Dignity Health over the layoffs. CNA Director Jill Furillo said the layoffs could violate the nurses' current contracts and the National Labor Relations Act.
