Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston has laid off 40 to 50 employees and also closed a 24-bed patient unit, relocating those employees, according to a Boston Globe report.
In March, the 9,000-employee system said it planned to eliminate roughly 15 jobs. That number has since grown, according to the report. Readjusted layoffs occurred "across the board" including nurses, patient transporters and support staff.
A hospital spokesperson said the adjustments were made "as part of good stewardship" and that BIDMC remains financially strong despite a 1 percent dip in patient admissions in March. Outpatient visits grew by about 7 percent last month.
