8 things to know about HCA

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare is a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest for-profit hospital operators in the country, with facilities in 20 states as well as the United Kingdom.

Listed below are eight things to know about HCA.

  1. HCA's facilities include 174 hospitals and 119 surgery centers. The majority of the company's hospitals — 106 — have been named top performers on key quality measures by the Joint Commission.
  2. HCA employs 240,000 people, including 37,000 physicians and 80,000 nurses. 
  3. Thomas Frist Sr., MD, Thomas Frist Jr., MD, and Jack Massey founded the company in Nashville in 1968. Park View Hospital in Nashville was the first hospital HCA owned.
  4. In 2006, Bain Capital, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., Merrill Lynch and members of the Frist family completed a leveraged buyout of HCA for roughly $33 billion. After a $4.6 billion initial public offering in 2010, Bain and KKR remain the two largest investors in HCA. The company generated $41.5 billion in revenue in 2016, according to its annual report.
  5. R. Milton Johnson is chairman and CEO of HCA, serving in these roles since 2014. He has worked in various administrative and management capacities at HCA for the past 34 years.
  6. In 2003, HCA Healthcare, which was then HCA Inc., settled a healthcare fraud case for $1.7 billion, according to the Department of Justice . The government alleged HCA submitted false claims to Medicare and provided kickbacks to physicians who referred patients to HCA facilities.
  7. HCA spends an estimated $2.8 billion on annual uncompensated care and donated $23.2 million to charitable organizations in 2016.
  8. In addition to care delivery, HCA has also expanded its business into different aspects of the healthcare industry. It owns Parallon, which offers consulting services to healthcare organizations to help increase operational efficiency.
