230 Nurses Set to Strike Tomorrow at Steward's Quincy Medical Center

More than 230 nurses at Quincy (Mass.) Medical Center will begin a one-day strike tomorrow, as negotiations between union representatives and hospital officials have been unsuccessful, according to a Boston Globe report.

Quincy's parent, Boston-based Steward Health Care System, closed a 40-bed nursing unit at the hospital earlier this year. Thirty nurses were laid off as a result.

Quincy nurses, represented by the Massachusetts Nursing Association, claim those staffing reductions are affecting patient care, according to the report. The nurses plan to protest in front of the hospital from 6 a.m. Thursday through 6 a.m. Friday.

Steward spokesperson Chris Murphy said the nurses have fabricated the staffing issue, according to the report. He said the nurses are "hoping that we don't want [these allegations] in the community, and as a result we go out and give them more compensation and hire more nurses to pay them $52 an hour to watch empty beds," according to the report.

Mr. Murphy said Quincy will remain fully operational if a strike does occur tomorrow.
