Union Claims Salinas Valley Memorial Violated Sunshine Laws

Salinas (Calif.) Valley Memorial Healthcare System is facing allegations that it violated state law when it held closed-door meetings to discuss a consultant's report earlier this year, according to a news report from The Californian.

The National Union of Healthcare Workers filed complaints with California's attorney general today, claiming the SVMH board violated Section 32106 of the state's Health and Safety Code, which governs the conduct of publicly elected healthcare boards.

The complaints suggest the board violated the law when it discussed a McKinsey report behind closed doors for hours at a time. The 132-page report cost $930,000 and included cost-cutting advice and recommendations for the hospital system to better position itself for a merger or partnership.

SVMH officials have said the system's board did not discuss the report's contents in detail during the meetings in question.
