North Carolina's Novant Health Joins Rex Healthcare, WakeMed in Fight to Expand in Wake County

Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health plans to submit a certificate of need application to develop a new hospital in Holly Springs, N.C., according to a Winston-Salem Journal report.

Novant will compete with Raleigh, N.C.-based Rex Healthcare and WakeMed, also based in Raleigh, to fill a need for more hospital beds in Wake County, N.C. State regulators have said the county is in need of 101 more hospital beds and will consider applications by health systems to fill the need, according to the report.

Novant plans to file its application by April 15. The exact bed size of the planned hospital has not been released.

Rex plans to apply to build a 50-bed hospital in Holly Springs, a 40-bed hospital in northern Wake County and an 11-bed addition to its main campus, according to the report.

WakeMed will ask to add the 101 beds to its existing facilities in Raleigh and Cary, N.C.
