New York's Glens Falls Hospital Cutting Licensed Practical Nurses to Make Room for RNs

Glens Falls (N.Y.) Hospital will begin a nurse staffing transition in which licensed practical nurses will be "phased out" in order to hire on more registered nurses, according to a Post Star report.

Hospital officials said the staffing changes are necessary in order to stay in line with industry standards. They added RN skill sets help deliver "better patient care outcomes." Glens Falls Hospital will offer LPNs tuition assistance for those interested in returning to school to become RNs.

Across the country, hospitals have been cutting LPNs or eliminating LPN programs altogether. Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street in Pottsville, Pa., and Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Mich., are among those who have begun phasing out LPNs.
