Miami Has Highest Healthcare Costs in the Country

In terms of healthcare costs, recent survey findings suggest Miami soars above all other parts of the country, clocking in at 35 percent higher than the national average for senior healthcare costs when costs are adjusted for local wages and other factors, according to a Miami Herald news report.

Healthcare costs for Miami seniors hovered around $18,199 in 2008, which is twice the national average when not accounting for adjustments. In other parts of the country, such as McAllen, Texas, which closely rivals Miami in healthcare costs, average senior healthcare costs were estimated to be approximately $14,940, according to the news report.

Researches looking for answers as to why Miami healthcare costs are so high speculate the large number of physician specialists is a major contributor, leading to a greater number of office visits and diagnostic testing. Trends in private health insurance costs reflect similar trends, with premiums averaging much higher than other parts of the country, according to the news report.
