Maricopa Integrated Health System, University of Arizona and District Medical Group Form Affiliation

The Maricopa Integrated Health System in Phoenix, University of Arizona and District Medical Group have signed an affiliation agreement that may lead to a new hospital being built near UA's medical school in Phoenix, according to a Phoenix Business Journal report.

Under the agreement, MIHS is a primary academic medical center, DMG is a primary faculty practice plan and UA College of Medicine-Phoenix is their primary academic affiliate.

One of the potential benefits of the affiliation is an increase in reputation of UA's medical school in Phoenix, which is in only its fifth year of operation. Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon said his goal is to create an MIHS hospital on or near the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, which houses the UA College of Medicine-Phoenix, by the time his term ends in six months.

The group hopes to address the state's physician shortage by providing coordinated education and research opportunities for medical students in Phoenix.
