California's Queen of the Valley Requests Voluntary Resignations

Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, Calif., has requested voluntary resignations from its approximately 1,000 employees, according to a Napa Valley Register report based on a memo to the center's employees.

The center has a $23 million budget deficit, which QVMC is working to reduce partly through a new neuroscience unit and wound care clinic. The center also failed to renew some building leases, froze some salaries and lowered merit adjustments. QVMC cut several positions through attrition but not enough to offset an estimated 23 percent increase in employee medical costs in addition to the deficit.

Besides voluntarily resigning, employees can also voluntarily decrease their hours, according to the memo. The center is offering those who voluntarily resign before June 20 severance pay and other benefits.
