5 Hospitals Using Social Media to Their Advantage

More hospitals are joining the social media revolution. Here are five hospitals that have innovatively used social media to add value to their organization.

Mayo Clinic’s Center for Social Media First of its Kind

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., has led the way in its social media presence, exemplifying how well this innovative platform can work in healthcare. This past year, Mayo established the first-of-its-kind social media center focused on healthcare and assists other hospitals by consulting them on how to gain social media presence. “We don’t know everything,” says Lee Aase, manager of syndication and social media for Mayo. “We’re figuring it out too.” Mr. Aase says the Social Media Health Network, https://www.beckershospitalreview.com/best-hospitals-in-america/mayos-social-media-health-network-goes-live.html Mayo’s latest initiative, will help foster a community to share best practices, training methods for employees, guidelines and Q&A about obstacles other hospitals are experiencing.

UCSF Launched a $600M Social Media Fundraising Campaign for Children's Hospital
Last month, University of California, San Francisco, launched a fundraising campaign emphasizing social media to raise money for the new 183-bed UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, which is expected to be complete in 2014. The fundraising competition, which runs through Dec. 16, has attracted support from celebrities and prominent leaders from Silicon Valley’s high-tech community. Teams participate online for various prizes, such as concert tickets, and the winning team will select the name of the new facility’s multi-level atrium.

Scripps Health Uses Twitter for Community Outreach
With messages like, “Let us know if there’s anything else we can do,” San Diego-based Scripps Health reassures the public that their care extends beyond the patient’s stay. Scripps doesn’t merely publish information, but makes a point to interact. When a patient voiced displeasure with an inaccurate hospital bill, Scripps was quick to respond, providing the phone number for an outpatient financial services representative. The system also shares health information and tips with more than 6,000 followers.

University of Maryland Medical Center Gets Specific

UMMC has established presence on numerous outlets, including an up-to-date blog, multiple Twitter accounts, five different Facebook pages and three different YouTube channels. Its Twitter accounts are detailed and share not only hospital updates, but specific health information, such as that of the UM Heart Center, UM Center for Weight Management and Wellness and the UM Greenbaum Cancer Center, increasing the hospital’s relevance in consumer’s daily life. UMMC also created a Facebook page specifically for physician recruitment and updates the page with current job openings.

Innovis Health – Social Media Fueled Communication During a Flood

In 2009, a record-breaking flood took over the eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota region. Fargo, N.D.-based Innovis Health launched a special blog to keep the public informed on service access. Twitter was also utilized to provide announcements to cell phones. Within 24 hours of the blog’s creation, thousands of people had visited the site to learn vital information in the midst of the crisis, such as the location of Blackhawk helicopters and whether local physicians were admitting patients.
