MU Health Care, Cerner design clinic rooms for better patient experience

In collaboration with Cerner, University of Missouri Health Care opened this month a new Columbia, Mo.-based outpatient facility outfitted with patient-centered, tech-enabled spaces.

The 85,512-square foot facility, called South Providence Medical Park, will house three outpatient clinics designed for efficient care. MU Health Care predicts the new center will manage one-sixth of the system's total outpatient volume this year with 100,000 expected visits.

The system consulted physicians, residents, nurses, mothers and children, in addition to health IT giant Cerner during the development and planning stages of the project. Cerner plans to implement several IT systems in the center, including its acute EHR system, PowerChart Ambulatory; its solution to reduce repetitive logins for clinicians, Cerner Instant Access; and its system to tag and track supplies and devices, CareAware Tracking.

"Through the entire design and construction process, it was important to us to balance personal touch and high technology," Thomas Selva, MD, said in a statement. Dr. Selva is CMIO for MU Health Care, medical director for the Tiger Institute for Health Innovation and division chief for General Academic Pediatrics.
