How Boston Children's Uses Predictive Analytics to Anticipate ICU Alarms

Boston Children's Hospital has brought predictive analytics into the cardiac intensive care unit, using a new software system that analyzes a myriad of vitals information to identify which patients' conditions may be worsening.

The predictive analytics software was developed in conjunction with startup Etiometry. Using a web-based interface, physicians can track patients' trajectories and view the software's prediction of a patient's risk for deterioration, identifying potential issues before the bedside alarms go off.

"There are so many pieces of data coming at the physician. With almost 30 ICU patients, we're just inundated," Joshua Salvin, MD, a pediatric cardiologist at Boston Children's, told The Boston Globe. "If we had something that could tell us where the hot spots are on the floor, we could direct resources to the most sick patients."

Because the system is still being tested internally it is accessible to attending physicians only, according to the Globe.
