12.2% of Eligible Physicians Have Attested to Meaningful Use

According to an article published in The New England Journal of Medicine, 12.2 percent of the estimated 509,328 eligible physicians had attested to meaningful use under the Medicare program, as of May 2012.

Adam Wright, PhD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and his colleagues, authors of the article, calculated attestation rates according to state, specialty, electronic health record vendor and month by combining data on attestations of meaningful use between April 2011 and May 2012 from CMS.

The 12.2 percent of eligible physicians included 9.8 percent of specialists and 17.8 percent of primary care providers. The attestation rate varied substantially according to state. Mr. Wright and his colleagues also found that providers used EHRs from 310 vendors.

Although the data suggests rapid increase in the number of providers attesting to meaningful use, the pace must increase further for eligible physicians to avoid penalties in 2015, the authors wrote.
