ONC Opens Comment Period for Meaningful Use Stage 3

Healthcare organizations and providers may submit comments until Jan. 14, 2013 on CMS' draft recommendations for stage 3 of the meaningful use objectives for the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record Program.

ONC's Health Information Technology and Policy Committee held a series of public hearings and listening sessions over the past few months to hear testimony on a wide range of experience with meaningful use.

According to a blog post by Jodi Daniel, JD, director of the Office of Policy and Planning, the ONC and HIT Policy Committee appreciate and recognize challenges with data exchange but have recommended that meaningful use stage 3 begin the transition from a setting-specific focus to a collaborative, patient and family-centric approach, which may help providers achieve population health and better patient outcomes.

The request for comment on meaningful use stage 3 is broken into three sections:

1. Meaningful use objectives and measures
2. Quality measures
3. Privacy and security

Professionals may submit comments by visiting www.regulations.gov and following the "submit a comment" instructions.
