How a $400M gift sparked a decade of change for Sanford Health: 5 things to know

T. Denny Sanford gifted the former Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sioux Valley Hospital $400 million in 2007, according to an Argus Leader report. Ten years later, the organization — now Sanford Health — expanded its footprint across the U.S., Ghana and China.

Here are five things to know about Sanford's Health's expansion following Mr. Sanford's donation.

1. Mr. Sanford's gift helped fund the system's Sanford Children's Hospital in Sioux Falls, a facility designed to look like a castle. The 146-bed facility opened in 2009.

2. Sanford Health system added an array of facilities and properties in Sioux Falls, in addition to clinics in other cities and states. In total, the system has 45 hospitals and 289 clinics across nine states and three countries.

3. Sanford executives in October intend to open the 100,000-square-foot Sanford Imagenetics care center, which aims to advance genetic research and treatments.

4. The health system has $127 million in property holdings in Sioux Falls. That's more than double what the original Sioux Valley Hospital had in 2006, prior to the donation. The health system owns a Sioux Falls-based event arena known as the Sanford Pentagon, a neighboring outdoor sports complex and 555 acres of Sioux Falls real estate, according to Argus Leader.

5. Sanford Health opened 17 clinics in Ghana, and plans to develop at least 300 clinics in the country. The system opened a clinic in Kunming, China, as a partnership with YMCI Calmette Medical Investment & Management Co., a state-owned company of the Yunnan provincial government.
